Asking for trouble

原文

Why did the policeman ask the writer to come to the police station?

It must have been about two in the morning when I returned home.

I tried to wake up my wife by ringing the doorbell,

but she was fast asleep,

so I got a ladder from the shed in the garden, put it against the wall,

and began climbing towards the bedroom window.

I was almost there when a sarcastic voice below said.

'I don't think the windows need cleaning at this time of the night.'

I looked down and nearly fell off the ladder when I saw a policeman.

I immediately regretted answering in the way I did, but I said, 'I enjoy cleaning windows at night.'

'So do I,' answered the policeman in the same tone.

Excuse my interrupting you.

I hate to interrupt a man when he's busy working, but would you mind coming with me to the station?'

'Well, I'd prefer to stay here,' I said.

'You see, I've forgotten my key.'

'Your what?' he called.

'My key,' I shouted.

Fortunately, the shouting woke up my wife who opened the window just as the policeman had started to climb towards me.

I'd prefer to + verb."

I'd preferI would prefer

例如,在文章中,“I'd prefer to stay here.”

规则:I'd prefer 后跟 to + 动词原形,可以添加原因或条件来扩展句子(如 “I'd prefer to stay here because I'm tired.”)。

横向比较:与 "I want to + verb" 相比,I'd prefer 更礼貌和间接,避免了直接性;与 "I like to + verb" 相比,I'd prefer 强调选择性,而 "I like" 更侧重喜好。例如,"I like swimming" 只是陈述兴趣,但 "I'd prefer to swim now" 暗示当前优先考虑。

跨语法联系:它涉及情态动词 would,可以与条件句结合(如 "If I had a choice, I'd prefer to go."),帮助学生连接到虚拟语气或假设情景的学习中。

学生常犯的错误包括:将 preferlike 混淆,导致表达不精确;或忘记使用 to + 动词原形,如说成 "I'd prefer staying" 而非 "I'd prefer to stay"。

错误示例:I prefer stay here.
I'd prefer to stay here.

原创例子:想象你在朋友的邀请中不想去电影院,可以说:“I'd prefer to read a book at home.” 学生可以替换 [verb] 为其他动作,如 “I'd prefer to watch TV instead.” 或在不同场景中使用,例如在工作中说:“I'd prefer to work alone on this project.”
